Scholarship Spotlight: Questbridge National College Match Program

LATE SEPTEMBER deadline for the special Questbridge National College Match program where students can apply for free to the nation’s best colleges and be considered for early admission and a full four-year scholarship!

QUALIFICATIONS: any high school senior with strong writing skills, regardless of citizenship, in the top performing 5% of their high school in the US, with mostly A’s in Honors Level/advanced classes, 1260+ SAT or 27+ ACT (if taken), with a family income of less than $65,000 a year.

Previous year, 1,600 seniors were admitted early decision with all tuition, room, board, books and travel expenses covered — a completely full ride! Another 800 or so who didn’t make it in the early stage were admitted Regular Decision and received financial aid through the program. Don’t Eat Off Other People’s Plates; Then Don’t Apply to Other People’s Schools!

You are not a carbon copy of your friends and your college list should not be a copy, either!

Your friend has their academic stats and strengths — and you have your own. Your cousin loved their extracurriculars and you enjoy completely different activities. Your father’s co–worker’s son is a country campus mouse and you are a city campus mouse. All these comparisons to say that you CANNOT and SHOULD NOT apply to certain colleges just because other people do.

How would you react to a parent exclaiming, “My daughter wants to change her college choice based on what her friends think of it!”

1) Who cares what her friends think? They have only 17 years’ experience in the world as she does and don’t know any more about anything than she does. But one thing she does know more than they do is about herself.

3) They won’t be paying her bills. How lucky for her that best fit and less debt coincide!

4) She doesn’t have to wait until she’s immersed her new life as a college freshman to mute and unfriend those critics; no time like the present!

5) Only SHE can live her life. She should not select a school based on what others think.

How Would You React: Student’s Impulsive Decision?

Four parents have extremely shocked expressions on their faces.

OMG! How would you react?

“Without our knowing, our daughter said yes to her ‘Dream’ college that will charge us $50k a year after scholarships. Meanwhile she had a full-ride offer to another school!”

What Day Is It?

Okay PARENTS of HS Seniors, Juniors and even Sophomores — take a look at the school calendar. Depending on where you live and where you plan to go, it’s possible you might be able to tour some schools, or at least drive by or walk the campus grounds. Remember to keep notes so the schools don’t blend together… Don’t depend on your high schools to arrange trips this year; but even if there were to be trips, oftentimes demand may lead to the bus running out of seats, or restriction by grade. Regardless, there’s always virtual events and tours; check calendars for those dates as well.
